Hell's Gate National Park is one of the few places in Kenya where you can walk freely among wildlife — zebras, giraffes, and warthogs — and then climb vertical rock faces above them. The volcanic gorges, geothermal steam vents, and towering cliffs of the Great Rift Valley create a setting unlike anywhere else on earth.

A 25–40 metre free-standing volcanic pillar — the most recognisable formation at Hell's Gate. Excellent holds, solid rock, and multiple routes mean every beginner finds a line they can follow. All routes finish with an abseil descent from the summit. You will remember this one.

11:30 AM

Meet at Hell's Gate entrance

The whole group assembles at the main gate. Your coach is already there. Park entry is handled and gear fitting begins.

12:00 PM

Safety briefing and gear check

Every harness, helmet, and belay device is checked before anyone goes near the rock. The briefing covers everything — no prior knowledge assumed.

12:30 PM

First climbs — Fischer's Tower

Everyone starts here. Beginners learn the fundamentals on beginner routes. More experienced climbers warm up on moderate lines. The coach is on the ground belaying and coaching throughout.

2:30 PM

Main Face — harder routes for those ready

Climbers who are ready move to the Main Face for longer, more technical routes. Those still working on Fischer's Tower continue there — the coach structures the group so everyone is climbing at their own level simultaneously.

4:00 PM

Pack down and debrief

Gear is packed, the day is debriefed, and everyone heads home. Most people are already planning the next Saturday before they reach the car park.

Before you book
your Saturday.

None whatsoever. The day is designed for complete beginners and the coach starts every group from zero. If you have experience, there are routes at Hell's Gate that will challenge you properly — the coach routes the day to match the group.

Children aged 10 and above can participate when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Younger children are assessed case by case — contact us via WhatsApp to discuss before booking.

You should be in reasonable general health and comfortable with physical activity. You do not need to be fit in any specific way — rock climbing builds its own fitness. The beginner routes at Fischer's Tower are accessible to most adults.

All technical gear (harness, helmet, ropes, climbing shoes), professional guiding and coaching for the full 4 hours, and instruction. It does not include park entry fees which you pay at the gate — currently KES 500 for Kenyan citizens and KES 30 USD for international visitors as of 2026. Check the KWS website for current rates before your Saturday.

Comfortable clothes you can move in, a hat, sunscreen, at least 1.5 litres of water, snacks or lunch, and your ID for park entry. Wear trainers or any closed-toe shoes — climbing shoes are provided. Do not wear sandals, flip-flops, or open-toed anything.

Drive from Nairobi via the Mai Mahiu Road toward Naivasha, then follow Moi South Lake Road southwards. Hell's Gate is approximately 90km from Nairobi — about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic. The coach will share a pin on the WhatsApp group created before your Saturday.

Light rain does not stop the day — rock climbing in light rain is manageable with proper shoes. Heavy rain or lightning will result in the session being postponed to the following Saturday and your payment transferred. We will notify all confirmed climbers via WhatsApp by Friday evening if weather is a concern.

Cancellations made more than 48 hours before the Saturday can be transferred to a future date. Late cancellations and no-shows forfeit the payment as the spot was held for you and we are limited to 16 climbers. Contact us via WhatsApp as early as possible if your plans change.
